Let's get measured
Tommy was asked to be part of the “ring guard” for my nieces upcoming wedding. He was not really sure what his task was, but I had been trying to explain that he would need to wear certain clothes and shoes and be a part of the event.
Things started to take shape when we made an appointment with our local Men’s Wearhouse. I have to admit I was concerned with whomever would need to do the measuring on him and how all of that would play out. Tommy luckily likes “touch”, but this was not going to be a hug or pat on the back kind of greeting. They needed good measurements in order for his attire to be correct.
As we enter the store, Tommy is reluctant but at the same time interested in a display of bow ties that they had. I took that opportunity to approach the order area and begin to explain that we were there for a fitting and that Tommy was autistic and we would just play this by ear and see how it went!
God placed the nicest lady as our helper that day! She started towards his shoulder area and Tommy immediately stepped away from her! LOL -
My “Spidey senses” kicked in and I said, “How about you measure me in the way you need him to be and then he can see what this tape measure business is all about! This worked perfectly! She measured me, then I stepped aside and told him it was “his turn” and he lifted his arms like a champ, and we continued this practice until all measurements were done. She was truly wonderful with him. She got a kick out of all of his expressions and excitement as the fitting went along!
She then needed to visually see him in sizes that she thought would be appropriate. We proceeded to the dressing room, and she brought us some options. Now, this boy is a pull up bottoms and pull over shirt kind of guy. All the buttons and hooks… you just never know!! But he thought he looked “sharp” and he loves to “look good” as you will see in the last picture here!
So we left there all smiles and feeling “snazzy!”
Fast forward for our return for our final fitting a week before the wedding. This time Tommy knew exactly what to do. He walked right in and right up to the order area and to our surprise our wonderful helper was there again! She greeted him with a smile, and he remembered her and asked, “How are you?” I explained we were there for our final fitting, and she directed us to the dressing area to try on his attire. Other than some issues with the pant length, we were good to go. Tommy especially loved this time there in the mirror checking himself out!! LOL
I would just like to express how grateful I was that God supplied us with what Tommy needed from the get-go of this experience. We could not have asked for a better outcome. I regret that I don’t even know her name, but she was an angel for Tommy that day and we will forever remember her!
What is coming in the actual wedding blog, you will not want to miss! LOL
Just Tommy being Tommy! I must keep the surprise…
- God Bless
