Chick Chicks!!

There are new ladies in the McClendon house these days. We have a new type of adventure that we are trying.

One of Tommy’s few but favorite staples are EGGS! We have and will always have a need for them and what better way to supply them other than having them produced in our back yard!

Tommy has really taken to them since their arrival... He watched as Heath prepared and built the brooder that they are housed in for now with a little bit of excitement. Even though we told him this was for baby chickens, the full story of what that meant I don’t believe he understood until they did arrive!

The first day was really special. He was checking on them every 20 minutes. It was so sweet to see the concern he had for these babies. He would just look and talk to them. We did help him hold one at first just making sure that he was being careful.

As the days have gone on, he still continues to greet them every morning with “good morning baby chickens” and a good night wish as well. I did get him to put some feed in his hand a few days back and he let them peck a little. But that was the only time so far. I tried to encourage him again to feed them and he put the feed in his hand, moved his hand down but as they came to him, he just dumped it at their feet…

I asked him, “don’t you want to feed them” he said, “no thank you!!” LOL

Our hope is to give Tommy this continued purpose of taking part in their care and feeding. And as they grow, collecting their eggs. Our neighbor invited us to bring him over to collect eggs from her hens before one of our past adventure trips and he really enjoyed taking her basket and helping with that! We are so appreciative of those that try and do even the smallest of things to include Tommy. Getting him out even in the neighborhood and accepted is a blessing.

Heath did much research regarding the temperament of the breeds that we purchased. Wanting to ensure that they were more like docile friendly pets!! This was mainly at my request (for me and Tommy’s involvement!)

Plans are unfolding for building the coop and putting the run together. I am sure that Tommy will be watching over them making sure they are taken care of!

Will keep you posted on “Tommy the Chicken Whisper!”

- God Bless
